Dam on the San Bernard River
The Salt Barrier Dam is a Small dam near West Columbia
on the San Bernard River
about 1 mile north of Highway 35.
The purpose of the Salt Barrier Dam is to prevent salt
from the Gulf tides from reaching the upper levels of the river where it is
used for water supply.

The stream was dammed on the
Wharton-Fort Bend county line in 1929 to form New Gulf Reservoir
with a capacity of 2,150 acre-feet. The lake is owned by the
Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, and its water is used for municipal
supply and irrigation
