Second Annual Men vs. Women Fishing Tournament
Saturday, October 17, 2009

Over 40 men and women came by boat, by car and by plane to the F.O.R. Community Center located at 20450 CR 510-B for the 2nd annual Friends Of the River (F.O.R.) San Bernard Men vs. Women fishing tournament. The showdown concluded Saturday, October 17th resulting in the second year the men weighed in as the better fisherpersons.

The competition was stiff as the weigh-in began at 3 p.m. But fishing had been tough. Prizes for first, second and third place were awarded for the heaviest fish (from either sex) for speckled trout, redfish, flounder or other (this category could include freshwater fish of the San Bernard). In addition, an award was given for the worst hard luck fishing story (as determined by the crowd) and the strangest catch. Thanks to our certified weigh masters this year, Darrell Powell and Kitty Handley.
Results

Redfish:

1st place – Cole Swanson with a redfish weighing in at 5.6 lbs.
2nd place – Chaney Moore with a redfish weighing in at 4.7 lbs.

Flounder:

1st place – Elan Graham with a flounder weighing in at 2.7 lbs.

Other:

1st place – Colton Moore with a catfish weighing in at 2.5 lbs.
2nd place – Wil Myers with a sand trout weighing in at .9 lbs.
3rd place – Elna Graham with a sand trout weighing in at .8 lbs.
Hardest Luck Catch – John Wallace.
Strangest Catch –  Marie Breakiron.

The bragging rights for the best gender fisherpersons went to the men determined purely by adding up the total weight of the largest prize winning fish of the men or the women.

Men – 8.2 lbs. vs. Women – 2.9 lbs.

After the weigh-in, the competition was set aside while everyone partook of hot dogs and all the trimmings. The men took the bragging rights again this year, but it looks like Pink Power is out for revenge next year!

Thank you to the F.O.R. Community Center committee members and to all F.O.R. Members for their hard work in setting up for this event- and to all who participated in this fun event.

H-GAC San Bernard Watershed Project
Boat Trip November 16, 2009

L. to R: Ken Wright; Kim Northon; Justin Bower, Senior Environmental Planner, Houston-Galveston Area Council; Marilyn Shockley; Larry Vacek; Vanessa Taylor; Brian Koch, Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board; Aubin Phillips, Senior Environmental Planner, Houston-Galveston Area Council; Nelson Taylor

The strong north winds gusting on Monday didn't stop the representatives from the Houston-Galveston Area Council and the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board from touring the San Bernard River. This was their first boat trip on the San Bernard. They wanted to see the San Bernard first hand to assist them in the upcoming H-GAC watershed management project.

After a warm greeting and a quick breakfast at the Community Center, eleven F.O.R. members, plus guests, Justin Bower and Aubin Phillips from H-GAC and Brian Koch, Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board, set off for a day exploring the river. First stop was the Conoco-Phillips Spillway, north of Hwy 35 and then back down to the mouth of the river. F.O.R. members took turns pointing out various landmarks and telling the stories that went along with them.

Bowers, Phillips and Koch were impressed to see the outcome of the effort that opened the mouth of the river from beginning to end. Many photos were taken as reference for the on-going presentations of the San Bernard Watershed Project which will enhance the region's natural environment.
